Predrag MatvejevićPredrag Matvejević was born in 1932 in Mostar where he attended elementary and secondary school. He began his study of Romance Philology in Sarajevo and finished it in Zagreb. He received his PhD degree in 1967 at the Sorbonne (in comparative literature and aesthetics) where he also earned his habilitation (1994).
He lectured on French literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb (1959–1991). In 1991 he first moved to France and later to Italy. At the Sorbonne (Paris III, Sorbonne nouvelle) he taught in the Department for General and Comparative Literature. Since 1994 he has been full professor of Slavic studies at the University of Rome «La Sapienza». He has been guest lecturer at various universities: New York University (1982), Ecole des langues orientales (1991), Collège de France (1994), Université catholique de Louvain (2000). On its 600th anniversary, the University in Perpignan awarded him with a doktorat honoris causa. He has received honorary doctorates from the universities in Trieste (2001), in Genova (2004) and from the university in his home city of Mostar (2006).
He has published the following books: «Sartre», «Razgovori s Krležom» (Conversing with Krleža), «Prema novom kulturnom stvaralaštvu» (Towards a New Cultural Creativity), «Književnost i njezina društvena funkcija» (Literature and its Social Function), «Otvorena pisma – moralne vježbe» (Open Letters - Moral Exercises), «Istočni epistolar» (The Eastern Epistolary), «Gospodari rata i mira» (Masters of War and Peace).
His book «Mediteranski brevijar» (Mediterranean Breviary: A Cultural Landscape) has been translated into 22 languages. In Paris it was given the “Award for Best Foreign Book” in 1993, in Geneva it received the “European Prize Charles Veillon”, in Italy, among others, it received the following awards: «Malaparte», «Boccaccio», «Silone», «Marinita» and «Obiettivo Europa».
His book «Druga Venecija» (The Other Venice) has been translated into English, Slovakian, Polish and Esperanto.
He writes and publishes in French and Italian.
