Mirko KovačMirko Kovač (1938), was born in Petrovići near Bileća. He attended the Academy of Theatre, Film and TV in Belgrade – the Department of Dramaturgy. Since 1962 he has been publishing novels, short stories, essays, and plays. He is the author of some ten screenplays and of a large number of TV and radio-dramas. His books have been translated into 12 languages.
His most important works: Gubilište (Execution Site), a novel; Malvina, a novel; Ruganje s dušom (Jeering with the Soul), a novel; Vrata od utrobe (Gate Made of Entrails), a novel; Uvod u drugi život (Introduction to Another Life), a novel; Evropska trulež (European Rot), essays; Knjiga pisama 1992–1995 (A Book of Letters 1992-1995), together with Filip David; Kristalne rešetke (Crystal Grates), a novel; Ruže za Nives Koen (Roses for Nives Koen), short stories, Isus na koži (Jesus on the Skin), a selection of plays; Grad u zrcalu (City in the Mirror), a novel; Pisanje ili nostalgija (Writing or Nostalgia), essays and others.
In 1990 a selection of six of his books was published by Svjetlost, Sarajevo.
Since 2003 the Fraktura publisher from Zagreb has been issuing his Collected Works.
He has received the following awards for his literary achievement:
NIN award, 1978; Andrić's award, 1980; Tucholsky prize, Stockholm, 1993; Herder award, Vienna 1995. After his novel Grad u zrcalu received the Croatian state award Vladimir Nazor for best published prose work in 2007 and the August Šenoa award of Matica Hrvatsk, he received the Montenegrian state award July 13th and the Bosnia and Herzegovina award Meša Selimović.
He is a member of the Croatian Society of Writers and an overseas member of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Academy of Sciences and Arts. He lives in Rovinj as a professional writer.
