Jakša Fiamengo was born in Komiža on November 26, 1946. Since 1962 he has lived in Split. He writes and publishes poetry, essays, critical texts, screenplays, and poetry for children. Since 1969 he has been a member of the Society of Croatian Writers (DHK) and since May 2008 he has been an associate member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and the Arts (HAZU). His work is represented in anthologies of Croatian poetry while individual poems have been translated into fifteen languages. As a versatile cultural worker he on occasions edits different publications, he has been a member of juries and director of various organisations. Amongst other things he has been the initiator and artistic director of the cultural event Summer in Komiža. He was an editor in the Split Literary Circle and up to his retirement in 2009 he was an editor on the newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija. His verses are carved on a stone plate on Krista Kralja square in Selce on the island of Brač and nearby the hermitage of St. Jerome on Marjan hill in Split. In 2004, Croatian Television made a film about Fiamengo entitled “Man of Words” (directed by V. Fulgosi).
For his activities he has been awarded the Order of Danica Hrvatska with the figure of Marko Marulić. He has received the state award “Vladimir Nazor” for literature and awards given by the Split-Dalmatian district, by the city of Split and the city of Komiža (annual and for life’s achievement). He has received the medal of the city of Split and others. Some of Fiamengo’s poems have been set to music and are sung by the most eminent names of the Croatian show business world, by Dalmatian harmony-singing groups, by choirs and children’s ensembles. The film I Palača rodi grad (And the Palace Gives Birth to a City - two editions) made on the basis of his screenplay (directed by M. Mateljan) was winner of eight international awards (first shown in 1998 in the UNESCO Palace in Paris). He has published some thirty books of poetry, among which are the titles Moje koje jesi (Mine That You Are), Zaziv protiv zloduha (Invocation against the Demon), Dolazak u kruh (The Coming into Bread), Ovjera beskraja (Attestation of Infinity), Svjetleća tijela (Shining Bodies)… and a number of books of children’s poetry, sonnets, poetic-graphic maps, selections and CDs of poetry set to music.
